The Tauranga City Centre is the primary commercial, civic and cultural centre of the Western Bay of Plenty. The aim of the strategy is to strengthen this role. The strategy sets out preferred directions for growth in various sectors that comprise the city centre and how the changes should be achieved. It is a long term plan to be progressed, monitored and kept relevant to achieve the vision over the next 25 to 30 years. Tauranga City Council and other key stakeholders are actively working on implementing the strategy. Key projects underway include:
- the waterfront redevelopment
- the creation of strong precinct groups, including The Strand Precinct and The Retail Precinct
- coordinated marketing at local and national levels to support business attraction into the City Centre
- active management of access issues
The strategy is supported by the work of the City Centre Action Group. A Group with the mandate to keep all stakeholders actively engaged in achieving and maintaining a vibrant and successful city centre.
The City Centre Strategy was reviewed through the 2012 - 2022 Ten Year Plan process. A revised Strategy is available on Council's website under the documents/strategies section. If you have a specific query about the Strategy please contact, Adele Hadfield on 07 577 7000.
