As a city, we are sending too many resources to landfill that can be reused, recycled or recovered. The council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan aims to find ways to minimise the amount of waste that we send to landfill.
The council’s role is to ensure sustainable waste management to protect public health and the environment. Everything we do in the solid waste operation aims to follow a hierarchy of waste principles: avoid, reuse, recycle, recovery - with disposal only as a last resort.
Manufacturers should take responsibility of their own products by building recycling into the cost of a product. A successful example of product stewardship scheme in New Zealand is Resenes Paintwise scheme. Other current voluntary schemes can be found at the Ministry for the Environment
