Paradox Outside will transform central city walls
Six of the world’s finest street artists will grace iconic central city walls with a series of works as part of Paradox: Tauranga Street Art Festival for the community to enjoy. Between 23 and 31 March 2017 Askew One, Fintan Magee, Lucy McLauchlan, Sofles, Charles & Janine Williams and Jacob Yikes will create unique murals covering Tauranga’s CBD.
British born Lucy McLauchlan will make the start transforming the wall at Brooklyn Bar & Grill into one of her monochromatic pieces of street art. Her large-scale paintings are at home within galleries and museums just as they are covering multi-story building across Europe, gigantic billboards in China, huts of The Gambia, Italian water towers, a Norwegian lighthouse, car parks of Detroit, to the depths of abandoned subway tunnels in New York. And now Tauranga is next. This is the first time, Lucy will be working in New Zealand and Tauranga is proud to be the first city in the country to display her work inside the Tauranga Art Gallery and outside on a city wall.
Watch Lucy painting the Brooklyn Bar & Grill wall at 53 The Strand in the next couple of days. Check the My Tauranga Facebook page for more details.
All remaining artists will commence their work in the week of 23 March and finish work by 31 March (weather depending).
The public is invited to participate throughout the work-in-progress phase and watch the artists painting the different walls located in the city centre:
- 24 Dive Crescent – painted by Charles & Janine Williams
- Brooklyn Bar & Grill, 53 The Strand – painted by Lucy McLauchlan
- Masonic Park at the back of the Tauranga Art Gallery – painted by Askew One
- Spring Street parking building – painted by Yikes
- Grey Street service lane – painted by Fintan Magee
- 176 Cameron Road – Rear of building, view from Durham Street – painted by Sofles
A walk around all six locations takes about 30 to 45 minutes allowing some time for photo stops. Please be careful when viewing the work in progress from the road. Check www.taurangastreetartfestival.nz for detailed google maps locations of the walls.
Paradox: Tauranga Street Art Festival is being developed by Tauranga City Council in partnership with Oi YOU! and Tauranga Art Gallery and will run from 28 March through to 15 June. The festival will have the Oi YOU! Collection, including the most extensive assembly of Banksy works in the Southern Hemisphere on display at Tauranga Art Gallery. Buildings across the city will be brought to life with giant artworks created especially for Paradox, featuring New Zealand and international artists, complemented by works by local artists and events featuring food, film, music and painting.
