Gaming machines

Tauranga City has a Gambling Venues Policy. One of the aims of the policy is to manage the number of gaming machines in the City, with a level of one machine per 220 people established as the benchmark.

Gambling Venues Policy (186kb pdf)

Policy objectives

  • To control the growth of gambling
  • To minimise the harm to the community caused by Class 4 gambling
  • To allow people who wish to participate in Class 4 gambling to continue to do so.
  • To define the parameters for when consent for a Class 4 or TAB venue will be granted

Applying for Gambling Class 4 Venue Consent

A Class 4 or TAB Venue Consent is required when you are establishing a new gaming venue, or when you are increasing the number of gaming machines at your venue. The consent is specific to the venue.

A society/trust is required to apply for a venue consent from Council before it can apply for a licence from the Department of Internal Affairs.

Applications must be made in the name of the society/trust and forwarded to Tauranga City Council for determination.
