Adopt a Dog

About the service

Suitable dogs that have been abandoned or surrendered will be made available for adoption.  There are often dogs at the Pound which need a good home, so check below to see if any dogs are currently available.

Council staff will temperament test each dog to ensure it is socialised with both people and other dogs before putting it up for adoption.

When adopting or buying a dog it is important to match the dog to your family circumstances.  Do you want an active dog or a quiet one?  What size dog do you want?  You also need to consider the environment that the dog will be kept in and your ability to exercise and care for the dog for the next 15 years.

The adoption fee is $90.00, which includes registration and a microchip.  Council does not de-sex dogs prior to adoption.

If you are looking for a particular type of dog, please phone us on 07 577 7000 and tell us what sort of dog you are looking for.  We can add you to our watchlist, and if a dog becomes available that meets your requirements we will give you a call to view it.
