Event organisers and stakeholders are encouraged to consider the environmental impacts of the waste produced in planning and delivery of events.
Clause 4 of the Waste Minimisation and Management Bylaw 2012 requires event organisers to complete a Waste Minimisation Questionnaire, which forms the basis of advice for minimising and managing waste.
Council has developed a document called the Vendor Packaging Guidelines (VPG), which outlines what packaging is accepted at the local composting and recycling facilities. Event organisers are encouraged to make it mandatory for all of their vendors to use compostable or recyclable packaging that is listed in the VPG.
The Waste Reduction at events resource booklet gives you information on how to plan for waste reduction at your event and contacts for waste/recycling contractors.
Tauranga City Council supports event managers and organisers to consider waste minimisation when they are planning and implementing waste management systems at events.
Resources are available (e.g. flags, bin covers for council bins and bin lids) for event organisers to help them reduce the environmental impacts of their event. Contact the Resource Recovery Coordinator on (07) 577 7000 for more information.
