Disposal is the least favoured option for the waste stream. Disposal of waste to landfill, or special treatment/destruction of hazardous waste prior to landfilling is only carried out when there are no viable alternatives such as Reduce, Reuse, Recycle or Recover.
About 80% of Tauranga's waste stream is sent to landfill either because there is no alternative or the cost of alternatives do not compare well with the environmental benefits gained at this time.
Some materials have higher environmental harm than others when land-filled. For example, small quantities of hazardous waste (oil, paint, solvents, e-waste) or large quantities of organic waste. It is a priority to keep these materials from entering landfills.
